CLOUD FOREST BIRD WATCHING - Amazingly, over 300 recorded bird species can be found in the cloud forest surrounding Villa Blanca -- including the Orange-bellied Trogon and the Keel-billed Toucan. Costa Rica is host to one-tenth of the world's bird species - 850 in all. More than 630 are resident species; the others are travelers who fly in for the winter. Birds that have all but disappeared in other areas still find tenuous safety in some protected areas of Costa Rica, though many species still face extinction from continued deforestation.
